Car error code reader have gone a far way from what they were, let us talk about a some history and bring you up to speed. Code diagnostics, commonly known as automotive scanners or OBD scan are hand held devices that can be plugged into an OBD input which will help identify the car engine and problems associated with emissions.
OBD scanners plug right into a plug that is found directly under the dashboard of all United States created vehicles after 1996. These are commonly referred to as OBDII autos, before 1996 autos were not created equally and car businesses had different methods and auto readers to diagnose issues. All cars manufactured after 1996 were developed with an OBDII system that allowed universal codes reader to help trouble shoot engine issues. The overall main difference between OBDI and OBDII system is they now have a universal coding system among all U.S. cars.
The introduction of OBDII car diagnostic code readers has helped simplify the issues of diagnosing and fixing engine related errors by standardizing the on board. Which has allowed for vehicle code readers to display the same code regardless of the engine model or auto manufacturer.
Once plugged in an car error code reader, up front data corresponding to the vehicle and cars specifications will be shown on the LCD screen of the scanner. This reader can also be used to check the CEL (check engine light) and provide other information associated to the the autos fuel injector as well as throttle related statistics. The most important important benefits of the reader is how it can look at your vehicles emission readings and identify whether it's in compliance with local mandated smog emission.
If a failure code is triggered that is related to the engine and or emission, that sometimes is related to the oxygen sensor, temp gauge, it will be written to the code readers DTC or diagnostic trouble code. This problem code is always an indication that one thing or another in the engine or emission system is wrong. This helps you figure out and further determine what exactly the root of trouble. Keep in mind that this does not mean that an engine needs to be swapped, rather that it may be a bad sensor and/or some type of block that'sthat is causing the unusual problem codes. This helps you identify the root of the problem, thus decrease the overall time spent with other car issues.
Car diagnostic code readers can be connected to a serial port of a computer to further understand even more specs that can help you better identify where the problem is starting and how to best combat that. Usually editions that are created between 1991 - 1995 manucatured by Ford, Chrysler, or GM, they created a simple universal codes for the autos although these cars have a different example of connector when comparing to other cars created with an OBDI type of system.
